BOOIN GARI CELEBRATES LOCAL INDIGENOUS HERITAGE

 big12.020

Indigenous culture and heritage will be the focus of the Sunshine Coast Booin Gari festival being held at United Synergies on Tuesday, April 9, 2013.

Booin Gari, means Come This Way in Gubbi Gubbi language and is an opportunity to build positive relationships and share in local Indigenous culture.

The event will feature a range of guest presentations from local community artists and performers as well as learning circles and workshops incorporating storytelling, Indigenous art, didgeridoo and dance workshops and bush tucker tastings. Live entertainment, including music, art and dance performances from local young Indigenous talent will be a highlight.

There will also be a visual arts exhibition of works from both local and nationally acclaimed Indigenous artists and new talent, and a jumping castle and climbing wall for the children.  Support services will provide displays and be available to assist with information. All activities and performances on the day, including a sausage sizzle and bush tucker will be free.

United Synergies CEO Christopher John said Booin Gari provided an opportunity for local Aboriginal young people and their families to come together and celebrate their culture, but also to share it with the broader Sunshine Coast community.

“The key purpose of the event is to provide an annual forum for celebration, connection, engagement and sharing of knowledge, history and culture amongst community members,” he said.

The event is now entrenched as an annual event on the Sunshine Coast calendar with attendance numbers continuing to grow each year. It provides a valuable opportunity to connect non Indigenous and Indigenous young people, families and service providers in a respectful and positive environment.

Booin Gari will be hosted by United Synergies at its 14 Ernest Street, Tewantin premises between 10.00am and 2.00 pm. Disabled parking will be available on site, with courtesy shuttle buses also available to nearby locations for easy access. The event has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body, the Queensland Government and the Sunshine Coast Council.
