StandBy – Support After Suicide is a community-based suicide postvention program that provides a coordinated response of support and assistance for people who have been exposed to or bereaved through suicide. Suicide is a time of immense crisis and the tragedy of suicide loss can create trauma – deeply affecting individuals, families and entire communities.

In many cases those bereaved by suicide do not know where to turn for help or how to find support that may already exist. StandBy provides a reliable, single point of contact coordinating existing services to enable an immediate response. StandBy is a national program with sites located across Australia. StandBy  provides an immediate response to people bereaved by suicide via a locally based 24-hour crisis response telephone number. People can receive face-to-face support provided by skilled StandBy Crisis Team members, and referral to a centrally coordinated system of local support services matched to their needs. StandBy supports people in response to a local immediate suicide loss, a suicide which occurs elsewhere but impacts local people, or when a suicide loss continues to impact people within the StandBy area. StandBy also responds to school settings, work places, community groups and other types of multiple bereavement experiences. No time limit is placed on the length of bereavement for access to StandBy so bereaved or exposed may seek assistance many years after the suicide has occurred. Through StandBy the community also benefits through an increase capacity to respond to those in crisis and enhanced community linkages, collaboration and working partnerships. StandBy is provided free to people bereaved by suicide, and is a n Australian Government Initiative. It also receives community support and donations and welcomes support from local groups and businesses.
